The 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 is already history. The competition has closed today. Barcelona is one of the few cities that have hosted the event on two occasions, as well as Rome and Perth. There have been seventeen days full of excitement and high level of competition including six world records being broken in Palau Sant Jordi just to mention the swimming, the main of the aquatic sports.

Nearly 400 people who were integrated as staff along with a total of 2500 volunteers managed to ensure that the event was carried out with complete success after working towards it for over two years. The attendance figures have also surpassed the original predictions. The final count was 2,293 athletes representing 181 countries.

All of Barcelona has been proud of these Championships, and its citizens backed it up from the first moment: nothing less than 267,000 spectators were able to enjoy the show of six events in four venues. While 225,000 of them purchased tickets to do so, the other 42,000 could enjoy the events held in Moll de la Fusta for free.

Those who followed the different contests from home enjoyed an HD broadcast by TVE, which was seen in 160 countries worldwide.

This was, following the words of the President of FINA, Julio C. Maglione, an “unforgettable event”.
