After losing to host country Spain in a very close semi-final on Wednesday night, Hungary came out confident today to beat Russia in the bronze medal match at the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. With the 10-8 victory at the Bernat Picornell Pool, Hungary avenged the semi-final final loss against the Russian side at this year’s World League.

Although Russia dominated the start of the game (2-0, 3-1), Hungary fought back in the first period for a tie (3:3) after the first eight minutes, concluding the first half 5:5. The game was even until the third quarter (7:7), before Hungary scored two consecutive goals for a 9:7 lead. Russia answered with a goal Olga Belova, who scored twice, but Orsolya Takacs lasted only 22 seconds to give the answer with an incredible 5m shot on goal for the final 10:8 result.

“My team was physically and mentally strong after the semi-final loss against Spain and we deserved the victory. The girls played as a team, as a unity,” said Hungary’s head coach Andras Meresz, who described the Spanish team as “the best of the Championships.” After finishing fourth at both the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and London 2012, Hungary has finally made the podium at a major sporting event.

For the first time since the 2007 FINA World Championships in Montreal, the Russian side has not won a medal at the water polo tournament. “We are very sad because we came to this tournament to win the gold medal,” said Olga Belova. “At the beginning of this tournament we played excellent, ten out of ten, but today we didn’t show our best today. ”

In the women’s water polo final of Barcelona 2013 Spain will face Australia tonight at 22:15 local time.
