The future of Wales’ elite centre for Olympic and Paralympic swimmers is in doubt and could be decided next week.

Cuts to British Swimming‘s budget after a poor London 2012 mean Swansea is not guaranteed funding as Wales’ only intensive training centre beyond 2013.

BBC Wales understands swimmers based at the Wales National Pool have been told preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games will not be affected.

British Swimming said no decision had been made.

Swansea is now one of four British intensive swimming training centres (ITCs).

British Swimming has already scrapped funding to its ITC in Stockport as it tries to make savings of nearly £4m.

An announcement on Swansea’s longer term future as an ITC will not be made before the end of swimming’s World Championships on Sunday.

It is understood negotiations between British Swimming and Swim Wales are continuing.

A British Swimming spokesman said: “The consultation is still ongoing and no decision has been made one way or the other.”

Nobody from Swim Wales was available for comment.

Swansea has already lost one of its star attractions with multiple Paralympic medal-winning swimmer Ellie Simmonds deciding in July to relocate to Loughborough.

The Wales National Pool is currently the base for Olympians Georgia Davies and Jemma Lowe as well as World and Commonwealth medallist Jazz Carlin.
