There was disappointment for South Africa at the 15th Fina World Championships in Barcelona after the three swimmers involved in Wednesday’s morning session failed to advance.

Leith Shankland finished well behind leader James Magnussen of Australia in the 100m freestyle. Shanklan’s time of 50.21 seconds was 2.50 seconds behind defending champion Magnussen’s time.

Backstroker Jessica Ashley-Copper finished joint 25th in the 50m backstroke in 29.08 seconds while Michael Meyer‘s 2.01.69 in the 200m individual medley, placed him 26th.

South Africa were expected to pick up two medals in the evening session, with Cameron van der Burgh being the favourite in the men’s 50m final, which also sees teammate Guilio Zorzi competing, and Chad le Clos in the men’s 200m butterfly.
