Montenegro and Serbia faced each other on Tuesday in an exciting and explosive game, enthralling the fans with world-class water polo action at the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. Under the eyes of over 3,000 fans (the stands at the Picornell Pool were almost entirely packed), both teams aimed to qualify for the semi-final to fight for the medals in the Catalan capital

Only few little details decided the game in favor of Montenegro. With seventy seconds left on the clock, Montenegro’s standout player Aleksandar Ivovic scored a goal from eight meters for 9-8 (final result). Serbia’s Andrija Prlainovic was the antihero when he took the last two shots for Serbia in a desperate bid to force extra time. The first went over the top and the second was taken after a period excitement that all came down to three seconds.

First Vjekoslav Paskovic was ejected and then Mladan Janovic was sent for throwing the ball away. Serbia had three seconds to equalise. Sadly, Prlainovic’s shot failed to find the net and the Montenegrin celebrations started with the bench players launching themselves into the pool.

“I’m over joyed. This is our long-awaited revenge to Serbia. This is a very important win for us. We have changed our tactics since the Olympics and we are hopeful for the finals,” said Aleksandar Ivovic, one of the big stars of the Montenegrin water polo side.

Serbia has not played outside the top four since independence from Montenegro in time for the 2007 World Championships. The two countries won the 2005 gold medal as a combined nation and have now played 13 matches at major championships with Serbia winning eight, drawing one and losing four.

Montenegro will face Italy in the semi-final on Thursday. The Italian side saw off local team Spain in the last quarter-final of the day (4-3). Hungary will take on Croatia in the second semi-final.
