Pool competition starts at the world swimming championships in Barcelona tonight, with the New Zealand team having taken a new approach to the meet.

The Kiwis have spent seven weeks in Europe, training at altitude while competing in major events.

Leading New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle says it’s been a completely different build-up.

“I’ve never really done anything like this before but it’s been exciting to be away from New Zealand for such a long time and it was cool to have an altitude training camp and a few competitions.”

Lauren Boyle is one of four Kiwis in action on day one.
She’ll contest the 400m freestyle.
