12 years later, a repeat for China

For the second time in a World Championships a woman has won the gold medal in the women´s 1 and 3 m springboard. Twelve years after Min Gao (CHN) did it, HE zi (CHN) has repeated the great feat at the 15th FINA World Championships.

The Chinese diver, He Zi has been participating in this event on the international circuit since 2007 but it is in Barcelona 2013 where she has managed to step on to the top step of the podium for the first time. Beside her was Wang Han (CHN) with silver and Pamela Ware (CAN) with bronze.

Out of the three divers He Zi has been the most consistent in her execution and from the first round she wanted to show off her potential, staying in the first position in every one, and finishing with a score of 383.40. “It´s my first gold medal in the 3 m springboard so I am very happy. However, I´m not completely satisfied with my execution and I know that I could have done it better”, she commented.

Wang Han´s speciality is on the one metre springboard, which gave her a bronze medal in Barcelona 2013. This time she wanted to try the three metres and it went well for her. Her strategy was to be between second and third position close to her compatriot and ended with a total of 356.25 points. During the press conference she confessed, “I wanted to take the gold. But in any case I did it the best that I could”.

Pamela Ware debuted on the podium in the individual event with a bronze medal at just six points behind silver, obtaining a final score of 350.25. “I really didn’t expect it. I was a bit nervous for four out of the five dives because this morning they weren’t going as I wanted”. It´s the second prize that she takes away after coming third in the women´s 3 m synchronised. “I don´t really know what to say. I´m still surprised”.

It is the first time that China has achieved seven consecutive titles in the 3 metre springboard in individual events. At this time, China maintains the lead of the medal table with 16 and in the diving they have accumulated eight gold medals, three silver and two in bronze.

When the divers were asked about the possibility of trying to dive from 20 m like in the high diving event that will take place for the first time at a World Championship, all three laughed and commented that they wished them “a lot of luck for the competition”. “It will definitely be something spectacular and I would love to be able to see it but I have a flight to Canada” commented Ware. He Zi smiled and confirmed that she would never dare “because the 10 m platform seems really high to me”.

Tomorrow will be the last day of competition at the Montjuïc Municipal Pool after eight days of seeing the best divers in the world in the venue. To close the diving competition of the 15th FINA World Championships the final of the men´s 10 m platform will be disputed (14.00-15.12). In play is the possibility of Thomas Daley (GBR) improving his fifth position of Shanghai 2011 and fighting to reclaim the gold that he achieved in Rome 2009. The Chinese divers are not going to make it easy for him, so it´s going to be a great final
