China’s seventh gold medal in diving – 3m springboard win

July 27, 2013

China claims its seventh gold in the diving competition of the 15th FINA World Championships thanks to He Chong’s performance who becomes the first diver to clinch two gold medals. Second step of the podium goes to Evgeny Kuznetsov and third to Yahel Castillo, 544.95 points was the best way to consolidate his first position and open a gap too big for his peers to close. He Chong wasn’t consistent on the execution, thus dropping from first in the first two rounds to seventh in the third. A four and a half somersault jump in the fourth round -which he later stated to be one of the most difficult in the world – got him 102.6 points which allowed him to recover his first place.

Kuznetsov (508.00 points) and Castillo (498.30 points) had a much tighter fight in which Illya Kvasha (UKR) and Qin Kai (CHN) were also involved. The second and third steps on the podium went to the Russian and Mexican divers who’ve actually climbed several positions in the rankings since 2011, where they finished in the third and sixth position respectively.

During the press conference a smiling Castilllo commented on having received the worst scoring on the easiest dive: “I never get it right although I know it’s the easiest”, he said. Castillo admitted that after the 15th FINA World Championships he’ll take three weeks off, “one to be with my family, another one with friends and another one on my own so that I can think about how to improve. I don’t want to say this is going to be my best result because I don’t know what will come up next”.

Tomorrow Saturday, heats for the men’s 10m platform will start at 10:00, and semifinals at 14:00, followed by the women’s 3m springboard final. The competition will come to its end with the men’s 10m platform final on Sunday.
