Small Zambian squad off to Spain

July 24, 2013

Three Zambian swimmers are tomorrow scheduled to leave for Barcelona, Spain, to compete in the 15th edition of the World Swimming Championships.

The trio comprises Alex Axiotis, as well as zone six bronze medalists Ralph Goveia and Tilka Paljk. Ralph and Paljik won medals at the 2012 Supreme Council for Sport in Africa Zone Six Games hosted by Zambia.

Team manager Deirdire Goveia said yesterday that said the swimmers leave on Thursday night ahead of the championships, which begin this weekend. Goveia said the swimmers, who spent two months at the South Africa High performance center, are in good shape and ready to compete.

She said, however, that the technical bench is not expecting much from the under-20 swimmers, who are yet to gain experience for a world competition.

“The championships in Barcelona will feature the world fastest swimmers, and our aim is to go and improve on the personal best time, and if possible break the national record,” she said.

Goveia said that the swimmers will next month compete in the under-18 World Championships in Dubai, the capital of United Arab Emirates. She said the Dubai Championships will help the swimmers to get ratings for the international Federation of Aquatics Nations (FINA).
