Romashina strikes gold again in Spain

July 24, 2013
Svetalana Romashina,

Svetalana Romashina,

Like in a mirror, the three soloists that climbed the podium in the solo technical have done the same again today in the free. The Russian Svetalana Romashina, the Chinese Xuechen Huang and the Spaniard Ona Carbonell shared, in this order, the medals of gold, silver and bronze in a final that we seem to have lived exactly four days ago.

Svetlana Romashina is already the golden girl of these Championships. The Russian solo performer has accumulated three gold medals so far, and if she manages the same tomorrow in the duet free, it will go up to four. She will remain as the leading lady until the swimmers started disembarking (the first day of the swimming competition is on Sunday).

Romashina was again a long way ahead of her two rivals. The Russian, who has substituted the pregnant Natalia Ishchenko in Barcelona 2013, is fulfilling to perfection her role as leader. Although she is not participating in the team events, her art comes across in an obvious and evident manner. Her execution reached new heights of quality and the judges awarded her with 97.340 points.

“I’m very happy with this new gold medal, though I’m starting to feel tired and I still have the duet final tomorrow,” said the Russian swimmer.

The final reflected what was already evident. Huang, with her second silver, totaled 95.720 points. Before that, Carbonell, who’s taking part in all the synchro swimming events (her family is following her daily) really devoted herself to the public, and for a moment they dreamt of a silver medal. But it didn’t come true; the judges gave her 94,290 points.

“Silver was far away, but we did our best to pursue it” confessed Carbonell. “The important thing is that we won a medal and the audience really enjoyed the performance. As from now, there’ll be a lot of work to do, but I’ll face it with calm.”

Tomorrow, in the duet free final, only Romashina and Carbonell will jump in the pool again, the former with Kolesnichenko and the latter with Crespi, whereas China will be represented by their silver twins once more, Tingting and Wenwen Jiang. And it leads us to believe that the podium will be the same, again.

Facts & figures:

The Solo Free Routine at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships produced an identical podium as the Technical Routine earlier in these championships with Svetlana Romashina (RUS) taking the gold, Huang Xuechen (CHN) collecting the silver and local favourite Ona Carbonell (ESP) pocketing the bronze.

Romashina secured her third gold medal at these championships, whilst no other athlete, male or female, has yet won more than one in any event or sport in Barcelona (2013).

Only one participant has won more gold medals in a single Synchronised Swimming World Championships than Romashina. Natalia Ishchenko (RUS) won at least four gold medals in each of the previous three World Championships.

Romashina raised her career tally of gold medals at the Worlds to 14. The competition record is the 16 by Ishchenko.

Romashina has yet to win a medal of another denomination than gold. In terms of total medals she equalled countrywoman Anastasia Davydova, who has won 13 gold medals and one silver.

Spain’s 30th medal in Synchronised Swimming in the Worlds gives them only seven fewer than Russia’s 37. However, Russia have won 33 gold medals to Spain’s one.
