The US team, the one that has raised the most expectations because of the size and quality of its members, is about to finish its preparation stage in Vitoria and leave for Barcelona. Just 5 days before the start of the 15th FINA World Championships swimming events, the main discipline already makes the news.

The US team led by Frank Busch is managed by two internationally renowned coaches: David Salo and Teri Mackeever. With 50 swimmers and 24 technical staff members, the US team is currently training in the sport facilities of Mendizorrotza in Vitoria, a city in the north of Spain. Leaders of the group are young stars Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin, both Olympic champions in London, and the exceptional Ryan Lochte, the great hero of Shanghai 2011 and the athlete with the second highest number of medals in a FINA World Championship ever (19 medals) after Michael Phelps. Two more swimmers who were in Barcelona ten years ago remain in the team:  Natalie Coughlin and Anthony Ervin, still world renowned sprinters.

The United States have been at the top of the medal table in all FINA World Championships since 1991. In 2011 they gathered a total of 29 medals, a figure difficult to attain by any other team. In total, the US team has won 389 FINA World Championship medals, a number which could increase to 400 in the Palau Sant Jordi by the end of Barcelona 2013.

The team will travel tomorrow to Barcelona where a press conference has been scheduled with accredited media for Friday afternoon.
