Another golden show by the Russian ballet

July 23, 2013

BCN2013 Team_Tech_RUS_01.

Three days, three gold medals. All of them in technical routine. Russia, home to the Bolshoi, is like a ballet in the water. As expected, and after winning the solo and duet, they’ve added another title to their medal panel here in Barcelona 2013, with the team technical routine. Spain claims its first silver medal, whereas Ukraine gets its first bronze in the Palau Sant Jordi.

he 15th FINA World Championships remain a triumphal march for the Russian synchro swimming.  They have no rivals as far as the technical routines are concerned: their execution, technical perfection, and academic choreography are difficult to match. The current Olympic champions left no options for the rest of the teams, just like they didn’t yesterday at the quarter’s qualifying rounds.

Russia amassed a total of 96,600, 1.2 points more than Spain (94,400), who finished ahead of the Ukrainian team by 1.1 points (93,300). This is the best summary of how things unfolded at the Palau San Jordi this afternoon, full to the brim with everyone wanting to see one of the best shows in a swimming pool these days. Russia didn’t even have to display its best team to win: neither Svetlana Romashina nor Timoshenko were among the 8 performing swimmers: Vlada Chigireva, Daria Korobova, Alexandra Patskevich, Elena Prokofyeva, Alla Shishkina, María Shurochkina, Anzhelika Timanina and Alexandra Zueva.

The spanish team was formed by Clara Basiana, Alba Cabello, Ona Carbonell, Marga Crespí, Thais Henríquez, Paula Klamburg, Meritxell Mas and Cristina Salvador. On the other hand, Ukrainian’s bronze shows that Ananasova Lolita, Olena Grechykhina, MGanna Klymenko, Kateryna Reznik, Oleksandra Sabada, Kateryna Sadurska, Anastasiya Savchuk and Anna Voloshyna make up a team to look out for in the future.

The show goes on tomorrow from 9:00 to 13:00 with the duet free routine quarter’s preliminaries, and from 18:00 to 20:30 for the same round of the team free routine.

Facts & features:

Russia won the Synchronised Swimming Team Technical Routine

Russia have now won this discipline all four times it has been contested at the World Championships (2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013).

Aleksandra Patskevic, Alla Shishkina, Anzhelika Timanina and Daria Korobova have now won three gold medals each, more than any other person in this discipline.

Russia won the discipline with 96.600 points, the lowest ever to claim victory with. In 2007 Russia totalled 99.000, in 2009 they scored 98.833 and in 2011 they won with 98.300.

Spain claimed their second silver medal in this discipline. They are the only country with multiple silvers in this event and the only other country apart from Russia to have claimed a podium place each of the four times this event has been held (2 silver, 2 bronze).

Ona Carbonell (ESP) is the only woman to have won a medal at all four world championships in which this discipline has been held.

Ukraine claimed third place and thus received their first WCh medal in any synchronised swimming discipline.

Ukraine’s previous best in synchronised swimming were two fourth places (duet technical routine and solo technical routine) earlier this tournament.
