According to Fred Vergnoux, his pupil Mireia Belmonte is arriving in Barcelona in “much better physical form than she was in London.” The Catalan swimmer won two silver medals (800 m freestyle and 200 m butterfly) in the last Olympic Games. The fixed objective of her coach has always been the same: “improve on previous results”. Vergnoux doesn’t like to speak of predictions or medals, but he sees his star as “very motivated and capable of giving it her all”

The Badalona born athlete will swim six races in the Catalan capital, the 400, 800 and 1,500 m freestyle, the 200 m butterfly and the 200 and 400 m medley. Belmonte herself recently explained that she hopes to qualify for the finals in all six events.

Regarding the words of her coach, the response of Spain´s biggest hope in Barcelona 2013 is simply “that´s what he says”. “We´ll see,” she continues, “hopefully I´ll get a medal. We have been working really hard to improve on previous results”.

The French coach is fine-tuning the preparation of his group of swimmers for the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013. They just joined the rest of the Spanish team in the CAR of Sant Cugat. “There is still work to do”, he says, regarding some technical aspects. “We have to fine-tune the turns, start time, and get some rest too” he adds. Regarding the pressure this tournament involves for his trainees, he says he feels that too: “I’m under that same pressure, and all my energy goes into taking maximum care of them.”

On the fact of competing at home, Fred regards this as something very special, “something you only do once in a lifetime”. He adds that “Barcelona has an excellent level of organization having staged some of the most important international events and I’m sure these Worlds will be a complete success”.
