15th FINA Swimming World Championships are set to begin

July 19, 2013

The 15th FINA Swimming World Championships is sold out since yesterday and the opening ceremony is due to start this evening. At 9:45 pm the starting pistol will sound for the most important swimming tournament of the world.

The swimmers are training, venues are ready for competition, and volunteers are at their posts. This evening the Palau Sant Jordi, home to the synchronized swimming and swimming competitions, opens its doors to the public for the opening ceremony. It has been sold out since yesterday and will see a total of 814 people taking part.

Hansel Cereza, artistic director of the event, said “the opening ceremony is an ode to water, a child’s dream come true”. Performed by the Barcelona Symphonic Orchestra and conducted by Arthur Post, Albert Guinovart’s ‘Planet water’, official hymn of the event, will fill the hall with music.

Synchronized swimming will be the first discipline to open the competition schedule on July 20th, together with diving and open water, followed by water polo one day later, on July 21st. High diving will make its official debut in a FINA World Championship on July 29th, whereas the swimming finals to be held in the Palau Sant Jordi will close the tournament on August 4th.

Altogether the 15th FINA World Championship will host a total of 40 swimming finals: ten in diving, six in open water, seven in synchronized swimming, seven in open water, two in water polo, and two in high diving.
