Aschwin Wildeboer is optimistic and he is ready to compete at the 15th FINA World Championships on home turf. The Spanish swimmer, who is one of the big medal hopes of the host nation, aims to achieve a top result in the 50m back event at the Palau Sant Jordi. His fans will push him at Barcelona 2013.

After four years in Denmark, where he was coached by his father, Aschwin Wildeboer returned home in 2013 to prepare for the Barcelona 2013 FINA World Championships. On the road to the major sporting event he made a pit stop in Pretoria (South Africa), training together with Olympic champion and good friend, Cameron Van der Burgh. “I discovered training methods that I didn’t even know existed. I enjoyed it a lot, it was a great experience,” said Wildeboer today at the Palau Sant Jordi, where the Spanish swimming team was presented.

Olympic participant in Athens, Beijing and London, Wildeboer is now coached by Frenchman Fred Vergnoux, who led Mireia Belmonte two Olympic successes.

“My goal is to qualify for the final and then we will see what happens,” explained Wildeboer, who has matured in his time abroad. “The preparation for BCN2013 has been lighter than anything I had done before and it feels great.”

Although his main objective is the 50m back race, Wildeboer will also compete in the 100m back at the Palau Sant Jordi: “I didn’t train for the event but it’s a great preparation for the shorter race. I really look forward to competing on home soil in front of my friends. They always have to watch me on TV and now they can see me live. I think it’s something special.”

Looking back, Wildeboer remembers the 100m back final at the 2008 Bejing Olympics, describing it as “very special experience.” In Barcelona, he aims to live another magic moment that he can share with his friends and family in Catalonia.
