Swimming’s governing body is preparing to set a maximum water temperature of 87.8 degrees for open-water events.

The absence of a fixed limit came under scrutiny after an American swimmer, Fran Crippen, died during a sweltering 10-kilometer race in October 2010 in the United Arab Emirates.

The limit is expected to be approved Wednesday. A minimum temperature of 60.8 degrees remains in place.
