Russia sweeps synchro golds in Kazan

Synchro Russia 1Russia proved its dominance in the synchronized swimming world Tuesday, when the team taking the fourth of four gold medals on offer at the World University Games.

The country won both golds at the London 2012 Olympics, and emphatically carried that form through to the student games in Kazan, which also offered solo and combined events in addition to the duet and team disciplines seen in the Summer Games.

Russia’s 10-woman combined team won gold on Tuesday, scoring 97.690, a 6.5 point victory over Japan. Hungary took home the bronze in distant third, scoring 78.070 points.

Earlier in the day at the Kazan Aquatics Palace, Beijing and London Olympic champion Svetlana Romashina won gold in the solo event with a score of 98.020 points. Japan’s Yukiko Inui, who came fifth behind Romashina in London, claimed the silver with 92.070; while the bronze went to Italy’s Linda Cerruti (88.790).

The host nation also picked up gold in the team event and the duet events on Monday, beating Japan into silver on both occasions.

Russia has won every synchronized swimming event at the Olympics since Sydney 2000.
