World champion and Olympic silver medallist James Magnussen has fine-tuned his preparations for the upcoming swimming world championships winning the men’s 100m freestyle in a dominant display at the French Open on Saturday.

With the Barcelona world championships just three weeks away, Magnussen posted an impressive time of 47.67 seconds in his pet event, and now holds the two fastest times of the year for the two-lap dash.

Qualifying for Saturday night’s final in a solid 48.05 seconds, the 22-year-old dropped a further 0.38 of a second between heats and finals to suggest he is in a strong position to defend the world championship title he won in Shanghai in 2011.

Medley specialist Daniel Tranter finished second in the 100m free final in 49.77, while fellow NSW swimmer Matt Abood rounded out an all-Australian podium finiah in 49.82.

Distance swimmer Jessica Ashwood took bronze in the women’s 800m freestyle in a time 8:37.41.
