The former Australian free-style swimmer Ian Thorpe is heading to one of the world’s greatest open water swimming competitions – the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim.

Thorpedo, who has set numerous world records throughout his glittering swimming career, stated his excitement at being involved in the event via Twitter.

He tweeted: “Excited about heading to #Istanbul next week to celebrate the 25th Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim @2kita1yaris.”

The event, located in the Istanbul Strait that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, will prove to be a tough test for the Thorpedo.

The course is from Kanlica on the Asian side of the Bosphorus to Kuruçesme on the European side of the Bosphorus.

The 6.5 km race is organised by the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, and is held annually. This year will be it’s 25th anniversary.

Thorpe again tweeted, saying: “Excited to be working with the team at @adidas @adidasAU through the 2016 Rio #Olympics. I’ll be 17 years with #adidas by then!”

This has led fans to believe that the Aussie is set to compete at the Olympics in 2016, although he failed to qualify for London 2012.

Thorpe has long been one of the most prominent and popular sports people in Australia and they will be delighted with the news that he may be involved in Rio.
