Ledecky won’t swim 200m free at Worlds

Olympic 800m freestyle gold medallist Katie Ledecky won’t swim the 200m free at the swimming World Championships, focusing instead on longer races.

The 16-year-old won the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyles at the US championships last week, and finished second in the 200m free to secure a berth in that event at worlds in Barcelona later this month.

But Ledecky, whose best 200m freestyle time this season put her at eighth in the world rankings, has opted out of that race, USA Swimming said on Tuesday.

Shannon Vreeland, third in the 200m free behind Missy Franklin and Ledecky at the US nationals in Indianapolis, will swim the event in Barcelona, while seventh-placed finisher Karlee Bispo becomes eligible for the 4x200m free relay.

An updated team roster released by USA Swimming on Tuesday confirmed that Franklin’s multiple medal bid will include five individual events – the 100m and 200m freestyle and the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke – along with a likely three relays.
