In the lead up to the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, four members of the Australian Open Water team have swum a 3km time trial at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane on Saturday.

The open water swimmers will kick off proceedings at this year’s World Championships, with swimmers racing in the 5km, 10km, 25km and a team event over five days of open water racing.

In the absence of fellow World Championship teammates Rhys Mainstone and Simon Huitenga, London Olympian

was left to battle for the boys bragging rights as he desperately chased down Queenslanders Melissa Gorman, Chelsea Gubecka, Bonnie Macdonald and Danielle De Francesco from two-and-a-half minute handicap start.

The Ron McKeon coached swimmer proved too strong over the 60 laps, managing to catch the girl’s leader, Gubecka with 400m to go and maintain a 45m lead to the finish.

The only New-South-Welshman, Poort was also racing for state supremacy ahead of Origin 2 this week, and as was the case with the first origin match, NSW swimmer Poort took top spot today – even with the staggered start.

With a time around the 30-minute-mark Poort is looking in fine form ahead of his 5km race in Barcelona, while 14-year-old Gubecka fought hard for the girls, finishing in second place with an impressive time of around 33 minutes.

The Open Water swimmers will next race in Barcelona in just under a month’s time on July 20, with Saturdays’s times a promising preview of things to come.
