Hundreds brave cold for nude swim in River Derwent

June 23, 2013

nude swimHundreds of people have stripped off and swum nude in the River Derwent in Hobart as part of the Dark MOFO winter festival.

It was two degrees and the water temperature was about 12 degrees when about 350 people took off their clothes and dived into the river at Sandy Bay for a swim.

There was plenty of screaming as participants dropped their towels and ran into the water.

The swim ended up being more of dip, with participants only allowed to stay in the water for a short time to prevent hypothermia.

Fires and heaters were set up along the beach to help warm up the swimmers when they came out of the water.

Hobart Lord Mayor and nude swim participant, Damon Thomas, says he was nervous before the dip.

“We went into the change rooms. There was a few revealing moments and effectively we went out and on a call we just tore in,” he said.

“I’ve waited for this for a long time and it wasn’t as bad – I would go out again now it was that good.”

The event for the Dark MOFO winter festival was fully booked with hundreds of people keen to take part.

In the end, organisers allowed everyone who turned up to participate in two stages.

Organisers are hoping the nude swim will become an annual tradition.

The more modest swimmers also took the plunge in a fully-clothed ‘prude swim’.
