Denmark‘s Mads Glaesner was on Monday banned for three months and stripped of his 2012 world short course 1500m title after failing a drugs test, swimming’s governing body FINA announced.

The 24-year-old tested positive for the banned stimulant levomethamphetamine in a control conducted during the championships in Istanbul last December.

As well as his gold medal he has also been stripped of the 400m bronze he won at the same event.

FINA confirmed that “all the swimmers’ results obtained since the test (after his bronze medal on December 14) were disqualified”.

In light of the punishment Italy‘s Gregorio Paltrinieri now inherits the 1500m title with the 400m bronze going to New Zealand’s Matthew Stanley.

Glaesner has the right to lodge an appeal against the punishment with the Court of Arbitration of Sport within 21 days.

Glaesner’s ban started on March 13, the date he was provisionally suspended pending his appearance before FINA’s disciplinary hearing last Friday.
