Uganda starts preparations for Cana Zone III and IV swimming championships

Uganda has started early preparations ahead of hosting next year’s Cana Zone III and IV swimming championships in Kampala.

“We have set up an organising committee to start early preparations for this major swimming competition slated for next year,” Don Rukare, the Uganda Swimming Federation president said while welcoming back Uganda’s team from the same championship on Wednesday at Sheraton Hotel. “USF needs a budget of around 100 to 200 million to host a successful competition and we have started preparations by seeking for corporate sponsorship and help from the government.”

Uganda recently returned from the Cana Zone III and IV swimming championships in Lusaka, Zambia where they bagged 11 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals finishing fifth out of nine nations.

Jamila Lunkuse, the country’s captain won six gold and a silver for Uganda at the Cana Zone III and IV championships. She is also the Rwenzori Sports Personality of the month of April.

It will be Uganda’s biggest swimming their ever hosting and Uganda is expected to enter a team of close to 100 swimmers that is girls, boys,women and men.

“We are using the event as preparations for several games that is the Commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, the Youth Olympics,” Rukare added. “Our vision is not short term and we will shall be monitoring our junior swimmers because they are the future of the sport.”
