Meegan class on display as yet another record falls

Andrew Meegan set his second national record in 24 hours at the Irish long course championships at the NAC last night.

Meegan, the 1,500m freestyle champion from the Aer Lingus club, set a new Irish senior best of 8:10.65 to win the 800m freestyle ahead of clubmate Conor Turner who clocked a new Irish junior record of 8:19.55.

Hungarian star Katinka Hosszu once again caught the eye when she touched in the fifth fastest time in the world, 4:38.67, to win the women’s 400m individual medley ahead of Irish Olympian Sycerika McMahon at 4:48.38.

Shauna O’Brien (18) picked up a 50m butterfly silver in a new Irish senior record of 27.75 behind Egypt’s gold medal winner Farida Osman at 26.80.

In an exciting women’s 100m backstroke final, Kilkenny’s Jane Roberts clocked a new Irish junior record of 1:04.22 to win gold ahead of Laoise Fleming of Kells at 1:05.71, while Paralympic gold medallist Bethany Firth gave a very impressive performance to take bronze in 1:05.76.

Brendan Hyland also set a new Irish senior and junior record in the 400m IM with a time of 4:27.45 to win silver behind Egypt’s Ahmed Akram in 4:26.34, while Brian O’Sullivan of NAC won the 100m backstroke final in 57.63 ahead of Kilkenny’s David Prendergast (59.24) and Bangor’s Jordan Sloan (59.45).

Sloan’s Co Down clubmate Mary Kate McDowell (16) showed her potential when she won the 800m freestyle in 9:01.61.
