Swim bosses shirking

One problem with the debacle at this week’s South African Swimming Championships at Port Elizabeth’s Newton Park is the lack of accountability.

Postponements on two days because of murky water led to a host of problems.

Not only was Olympic gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh compelled to miss his key event, several others, including fellow Olympian Roland Schoeman, complained of picking up ear infections.

Others, especially asthma sufferers, said the excess chlorine used to combat the water pollution had affected their breathing.

This disruption comes amid controversy over funding for our swimmers’ overseas campaigns. The most feeble comments come from those officials who say this is “unfortunate” and “not so bad”.

In fact it’s a disgrace where once again the interests of athletes have been ignored.

At the top level, swimmers train with precision to peak at specific times.

They have to in order to be at their best. Officials and host cities are evidently not capable of the same dedication.

But if they had any sense of decency heads would roll for the PE disaster.

How is it possible that no one is responsible?
