Thomas, Russell near national marks

Noemie Thomas of Vancouver missed the Canadian record by 0.01 seconds in the women’s 50-metre butterfly preliminaries on Wednesday to open the Swimming Canada World Championships Trials at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Thomas clocked 26.50 seconds just missing the Canadian record of 26.49 set by Katerine Savard of Quebec City in 2011. Sandrine Mainville of Montreal was the second fastest at 26.95 and Caroline Kuczynski of Pointe-Claire, Que., qualified third at 27.44.

Sinead Russell of Burlington, Ont., also neared her national mark in the 100-m backstroke finishing in 59.98 just 0.3 seconds off her record time from the 2011 FINA World Championships.

The other top qualifiers in women’s competition were Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 200-m freestyle and Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., in the 200-m butterfly.

Top qualifers in the men’s races were Kelly Aspinall of Vancouver in the 50-m butterfly, Blake Worsley of Victoria in the 200-m freestyle, Charles Francis of Cowansville, Que., in the 100-m backstroke, David Sharpe of Hallifax in the 200-m butterfly.

The top-eight advance to tonight’s finals starting at 6 p.m. (local). The men’s 800-m freestyle and women’s 1,500-m freestyle finals are also tonight.
