Swimming Australia (SAL) has announced it will appoint an interim head coach to replace Leigh Nugent, who has stood down from the role in the wake of the stilnox scandal that has dogged the Australian team since the London Olympics.

In a statement, SAL president Barclay Nettlefold confirmed that Nugent had approached him last week and “indicated that he no longer wanted to continue in the role of head coach”.

“Leigh actually approached us to discuss his future and where he would best fit into the new structure of the high performance unit,” said Nettlefold.

“In those discussions it soon became very clear that while he still wanted to remain involved in the sport, he didn’t want to continue in the position of head coach.”

Nettlefold said the interim coach would be appointed for the period of the national selection trials in Adelaide, April 26-May 3, to “maintain focus” on the national team.

Meanwhile, SAL has confirmed that current Hockey Australia chief executive Mark Anderson is the preferred candidate to become the organisation’s new CEO and that his appointment is likely to be finalised next week.

Anderson, who is currently completing a course at the Harvard Business School in the US, has been the chief executive at hockey for the past four years.

SAL is also considering applicants for the new role of high performance director and confirmed it has reduced the field to a final two candidates, one of whom is believed to be Michael Scott, the former British Swimming high performance director and former Australian Instititue of Sport director.

Nettlefold believes the new CEO should be in place before the other appointment is made so he can have imput into the decision.

He said the “new leadership strucuture” would be in place before the national championships in Adelaide.
