Lauren Boyle‘s managed to put off the water difficulties to one side to qualify for this year’s world swimming championships.

New Zealand’s leading swimmer has comfortably gone under the A standard in the 400 metres freestyle on day one of the national champs in Auckland.

Boyle’s coach Mark Regan resigned from Swimming New Zealand earlier this year and she says she’s suffered.

“It’s actually been really hard for me but I’ve had some good support outside of Swimming New Zealand and I’ve been working through it. It’s always hard when you’re at a really high point in your career and you lose someone that’s helped you get there.”

Boyle’s time of 4:06.39 seconds was slower than her heat, but she’s still content.

“It’s nice to swim a time that’s comparable to what it would take to get in a final at the world champs now, so it’s good.”

As well as Boyle, Glenn Snyders, Sophia Batchelor and Matt Stanley have also met the A qualifying standards on day one of competition.

Snyders says his move to the US for training has boosted his career.

“It’s good. I love it and it’s very different, I think it’s something I definitely needed.”

Day two features Olympian Gareth Kean in the 100 backstroke.
